INTRODUCTION
The Association of Medical Esthetic Nurses (AMEN) recognized the need for certification in esthetic practice and developed a comprehensive program aligned with widely accepted esthetic standards. Understanding that the knowledge required to perform non-surgical esthetic procedures safely is universal across various medical professionals—whether M.D., D.O., P.A., A.P.R.N., R.N., or D.D.S.—AMEN brought together a group of experts in medical esthetics. This collaborative effort resulted in the formation of the American Academy of Medical Esthetic Practitioners (AAMEP), referred to as the “Academy.” AMEN now serves as the current administrator for the certification exam.
The Center for Medical Esthetic Certification, a division of AAMEP, bases its credentialing program on standards set by other specialty credentialing organizations. The goal is to promote excellence in esthetic practice by certifying qualified professionals.
Certification is reserved for practitioners who meet specific clinical requirements, pursue advanced training beyond basic preparation, and receive the endorsement of their peers. After satisfying these prerequisites, candidates are eligible to take the certification exam, which is based on nationally recognized standards in esthetic practice. This certification demonstrates the specialized knowledge and skills of the practitioner, exceeding the requirements for licensure.
The Center’s credentialing board oversees exam development, passing score criteria, eligibility requirements, and the certification of practitioners who successfully pass the exam and meet certification standards.
The exams are objective tests covering essential knowledge, understanding, and application of professional esthetic theory and practice. Developed by a committee of experts in various fields of esthetic medicine, the exams are designed to assess the competencies required for excellence in the field. Each exam item undergoes rigorous review and refinement to ensure accuracy and relevance, with psychometric and editorial oversight provided by the Center’s staff. The final test content is carefully selected to reflect the specified areas of expertise.
PHILOSOPHY OF CREDENTIALING
Credentialing is a process that allows medical esthetic practitioners to publicly demonstrate their expertise and be recognized for their knowledge. On a voluntary basis, the Center offers certification exams to assess entry-level knowledge in esthetics.
The Center’s certification does not grant licensure, as the authority to practice is regulated by state boards. While the certification reflects practice and educational standards, it is not a regulatory requirement for state recognition. The responsibility for developing such standards lies with the professional organizations and the medical/nursing education community.
Healthcare professionals are encouraged to explore how certification relates to state licensure requirements and local employment opportunities. Upon passing the exam, practitioners can use the designation of Medical Esthetics Practitioner-Certified (MEP-C) to signify their advanced qualifications.
The Center plans to seek accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, National Organization for Competency Assurance, American Board of Medical Specialties, or American Board of Nursing Specialties once two years of mandatory testing have been completed. All aspects of the certification process currently comply with accreditation standards in preparation for this next step.
